Backwash is a video, sound, and sculptural installation that weaves together chemical analysis, intimate history, and social pressure. It reflects a desire to rewrite the relationships that shape us—both personal and socially prescribed. Taking the body as both point of departure and return, Backwash brings together reflections on representations and the effects of relationships with the analysis of bodily fluids. Scientific graphs become choreographic and musical scores. Screendance and archival material are projected inside the artist’s childhood toy house, creating a dialogue between biological and chosen family. Backwash: In the Murky Waters of our Bonds is part of an ongoing research process informed by queer feminist theory and a delightfully odd pop-cultural imaginary drawn from the world of the Fast and Furious films.
This visual installation is presented in collaboration with the Maison de la culture de Sainte-Anne-des-Monts.
Working across performance, screendance, singing, dance, theatre, and clowning, Stéphanie Beaudoin’s practice centers the body as an artistic medium and is rooted in sensations she hopes will be contagious. Serious about not taking herself too seriously, endlessly curious and eager for new challenges, she has recently added rap and installation art to her explorations.
Stéphanie has a deep affection for collective practices. She is a proud member of Lutte à l’Est, a regional queer feminist league; Les Matantes à bouche, a feminist theatrical singing group; and UTIL, a community arts organization. She also collaborates on numerous projects with artists, collectives, and organizations, including Pogo & Cheez Lyz, Vuinbrekin, and Tour de Bras, among others. In addition, she supports musical groups in the development of their stage work and accompanies humans in their discovery of cold-water swimming.
Driven by the conviction that our bodies, hearts, and relationships are spaces where rigidifying social sediments accumulate, she continues to explore un-sedimentation through multiple artistic and somatic approaches. Habitacle may be, for her, the beginning of a love affair with car bodies.
