From a cycle of creation exploring the presence of theremins within a sculptural landscape, this opus places at its core the ideas of eternal rest, sound signal, calm, rhythmic senescence, and collectivity. A song for everyone. A solar ode for three human-theremins accompanied by sculptural instruments.
Are we not all theremins? Let us lie here together, within a territory that resonates with gentle softenings. Let us absorb. Wander. Travel. For a moment of silence in this world. Filled with sound waves, a plastic landscape, and playful bodies, a time for rest.
Repos is a creation at the crossroads of dance, performance, music, and visual art, cocreated by Léandre Bourgeois, Louis Bouvier, Virginie Reid, and Anne Thériault, with the participation of Naomi Hilaire, Marilyne St-Sauveur, Hannah Isolde, and Marie-Ève Carrière.

A sculptural installation accompanying this performance will also be open to the public on Friday, July 24, and Saturday, July 25, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Anne Thériault, Virginie Reid, Léandre Bourgeois, and Louis Bouvier came together for the first time around Récital, the first opus in a cycle exploring the impact of the theremin in a dance creation which culminated at the FTA 2018.
In 2023, the quartet reunited for the installation La conjugaison des pensées complexes, this time led by Louis Bouvier in collaboration with Léandre Bourgeois, and presented at CIRCA art actuel, an artist-run centre. Within this proposal, Virginie Reid and Anne Thériault created requiem, the second opus of the cycle—an evolving performance unfolding within the installation and deployed in a 360-degree environment.
Accompanied by the Conseil des arts de Montréal (CAM), the quartet was granted the opportunity to continue the journey: the installation La conjugaison des pensées complexes and the performance requiem were invited to be presented in 6 Maisons de la culture between 2024 and 2026. Seeking to extend the long-form reflection initiated with the first two opuses of the cycle, the team used this local touring opportunity to develop a third performative work, capable of being transposed to a stage setting.
Thus, in continuity with the performance requiem—presented in an art gallery context and exploring the memory of living and non-living works—the new piece Repos, the third opus around theremins, places at its core the ideas of pause, silence, and eternal rest. The work is conceived for three performers within a singular scenography composed of instrument-sculptures.
Since the beginning of this journey, the quartet has brought its multifaceted projects to fruition in a variety of contexts that privilege openness to the public and dialogue. They situate dance wherever it may be found—across disciplines and within alternative contexts.
