Camille Montagne and Anatole De Baerdemaker present two tales set in Haute-Gaspésie: La poule prodigieuse and La soupe aux cailloux. Behind tragi-comic allegories, the two storytellers take a serious, playful look at society.
La poule prodigieuse by Camille Montagne
In the verdurous valley of Mont-Louis, life goes on peacefully. Until a group of young new country dwellers moves in, naive and full of good intentions. Driven by their peasant fantasies, they acquire four chickens. One of them, a black-and-white-striped Plymouth Rock, is particularly lovely. Who could have predicted the rest?

Deep in Gaspesie and deep in the winter, a small village loses its ability to form itself as a community. Tackled by a food shortage, life starts freezing. An enthusiastic traveler brings some warmth and prepares supper with a mysterious little stone.
Camille Montagne is a storyteller and theater artist. She lives in the Mont-Louis valley, on the Mi’gmaq territory of Gespe’gewa’gi, where she strives to care for her community, weave queer feminist imaginaries and support indigenous resurgences. She loves telling stories, and especially listening to them, in bed, around the fire or at the kitchen counter. Camille seeks out tales as one collects pebbles, to carry in a pocket or to place on a windowsill. She is fascinated by the side paths that folklore invites us to take. Her recent storytelling performances happened all across the province, including at Dimanches du conte in Montreal, at Rendez-vous des Grandes Gueules in Trois-Pistoles and at the Festival gaspésien de Contes et légendes. A 2017 graduate of the École supérieure de théâtre de l’UQAM, she is also pursuing a theater career as a performer and a creator. She serves as artistic co-director of Théâtre des petits paradigmes poreux. (Photo : Annie Éthier)
